Are you off on a motorhome holiday? Have you considered how a potential breakdown could change your plans? Although a breakdown isn’t always on the cards, imagine the devastating feeling of coasting along in your holiday mood, soon to be faced with a fault or breakdown.
To avoid this scenario and to ensure your motorhome holiday is possible, there’s some preparation you can complete in advance. Of course, all breakdowns can’t be controlled; however, some advance preparation could be the luck you need, avoiding any possibilities.
To reassure you, we’ve put together some top tips to prepare your motorhome for your next trip. Along with our recommendations, see how our Glide Rite products could make your holiday even better.
As touched on above, some breakdowns cannot be stopped. However, there are some common causes for a motorhome breakdown, with key focus placed on maintenance.
The most likely causations of a complete breakdown include, tyre damage, battery issues, water damage and engine problems. Now of course, a freak breakdown could arise. However, most of these damages can be reduced or avoided by ensuring regular maintenance of your motorhome is completed.
With this in mind, our greatest recommendation will be to regularly check over your motorhome, especially in the winter months as usage will decrease.
Alongside this, there are many other ways of avoiding a potential motorhome breakdown or damage. If you’re going away soon, it will be a good idea to check them below, making sure you reach your holiday destination, breakdown free.
One of the best ways you can prepare for your next holiday will be through completing a number of checks on your motorhome vehicle. These checks are essential and should always be completed with safety in mind:
Before heading off on your motorhome holiday, checking your tyre pressure should be made a priority. This can be completed by using an accurate gauge, while measuring against the ideal pressure for your vehicle. Alongside pressure, the quality of your wheels and tyres should also be inspected, ensuring that tread depth is at least 1.6mm, following UK standards. This is mandatory for a safe drive. Therefore, without meeting these standards, a breakdown or even accident is probable. Avoiding this can be likely by ensuring tyre quality meets your vehicles specification.
While being on the road, ensure you have a spare tyre or puncture kit in your motorhome to ease any possible breakdowns while away.
Another essential check before leaving for your trip will include oil levels. You should regularly check the oil levels in your motorhome engine to ensure that the engine can work effectively. This should be a regular check completed, however, is even more important before a long trip or holiday. If the oil level is either too low or too high, engine damage is probable, resulting in a breakdown. If you believe there are any issues with your motorhome’s engine, prioritise the inspection of a professional mechanic.
Before embarking on your next motorhome trip, it will be a good idea to check your coolant levels. Although your trip may be planned for a summer month, it is highly important to discover if any leaks are present. This check should be completed while the engine is cold, and again when the engine is running. Leaks can lead to substantial damage, which can develop into a breakdown. Avoiding this is probable by completing accurate tests before leaving for the road.
Although unlikely, it is possible that electrics can breakdown. However, before heading on a trip, especially to somewhere new or at night, it is important that you check your headlights, brake lights, fog lights and wipers. Electrical issues can usually be resolved effectively. However, by observing consistently, avoiding electrical faults or breakdowns is prospective.
To ensure that your engine will start, it is important that you check your battery and leisure battery. If your motorhome has been off the road for a while, it is likely that your battery could become flat, resulting in an unforeseeable breakdown. This scenario can be frustrating. Avoiding a motorhome breakdown can be achieved by completing this check before you set off.
Alongside essential checks, it is highly important that you source breakdown cover for your motorhome. This will ease any unexpected breakdowns, ensuring that you can get back onto the road as soon as possible. Depending on your travel arrangements, checking vehicle and driving policies should also be completed to ensure your motorhome is to standard for driving conditions in your chosen holiday destination.
Essential checks will ensure that breakdown possibilities are decreased. However, there are also products available to advance the comfort and safety of your drive. Here at Glide Rite, we have a number of specialised products, designed to improve the drive-ability and safety of motorhomes.

A very happy customer having just had rear air assist fitted to our Le Voyageur motorhome, by the team at Glide Rite. From the initial contact with David, all through the booking process and then on the day of fitting this week, everything was professionally handled. Much appreciated was the ability to park outside overnight, complete with hook up, security lights and CCTV, and then the generous use of a courtesy car whilst my installation was done. A great job, and glad to have decided on the day to upgrade to the Air Master Controller, looks great in our Mercedes cab 😁Posted on bikerarthur27Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. The whole process of adding semi air suspension from start to finish was completely stress free; cannot recommend this company highly enough. Was able to stop overnight as had travelled along distance from the Midlands, 3 hours journey. Electric hook up available which was great as the temperature went down to freezing overnight.Posted on Peter CliffordTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. What can I say.... cannot fault the excellent product - semi air suspension and upgraded front springs on Rapido 8096DF....rides like a dream and levels her out a treat. More to the point, David and Carl are the business.... professional, helpful and friendly and couldn't do more. We stayed outside the night before, free electric hook up, free use of courtesy car and a lift to and from the ferry for our sightseeing in Liverpool whilst they completed the work. Top of our list for any future work. Give them a go, you will not regret it! This company is one of the best I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with all the staff are courteous, knowledgeable and can't do enough to help you. I had the semi air suspension fitted and what a difference it made, it should be mandatory on any camper conversion. The van now handles like it should instead of trying to steer a brick. First class professional workmanship, so glad we had this job done many thanks to Dave and Carl at Glide-Rite. Excellent service, definitely recommend this company.Posted on Chris BruneyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Edit Nov 2025 I wanted to leave this follow-up review for Carl, David, Alan and the team at Glide-Rite. After having a levelling system fitted almost 18 months ago and then my semi-air suspension 6 months ago, we took our motorhome on an epic journey across Europe, fully laden with everything you need for a long trip (including a motorcycle). Both systems were transformational and gave us speed and comfort on almost every kind of terrain – incredible investments that massively enhanced our experience. While the initial installations were flawless, what truly amazed me was the after-sales service. I had an issue – most likely my mistake – and Carl had also promised a component upgrade last year. It would have been so easy to fob me off, but even after 18 months he treated me no differently to the first time we met: as a valued customer. I’m just staggered! Today they spent almost three hours completing the work and made me comfortable in their office while I waited. The work was completed to a very high standard, and they even replaced a component I had damaged – all free of charge. So when you’re shopping around for cheaper prices, please remember: there are still companies in the UK that remember what proper customer service looks like – Glide-Rite is at the top of the list! ///////////////////////////////////////////// Outstanding customer service end-to-end! From the very first enquiry of our HPC Self Levelling System, to the chauffeur collection at the train station after fitting, this team have been simply amazing. First class, secure facilities and top-notch workmanship where attention to detail is unrivalled. Really happy to recommend Carl, David, Alan and will definitely be back for the air suspension in the future!Posted on David WardTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I can honestly say say that there aren’t many companies nowadays that offer the high level of customer service and satisfaction that Glide Rite do. We travelled from Yorkshire to have rear air suspension fitted and was really impressed with our experience! We were allowed to park up our motor home with free electric hook up and stay over night as our job was booked in for the next day. On top of this we were offered the use of a practically new courtesy car with a full tank of fuel to spend the day site seeing around Liverpool. Carl is the nicest and most professional man and he made us feel so valued. 💯% prefect thank you so much 👍🏼 would highly recommend to anyonePosted on Richard CooperTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
